In Fall 2017, Philly Doula Co-op launched our financial accessibility grant system, the Access Fund. In early 2023, we renamed the fund the Selma Brothman Access Fund in honor of one of our founding doulas. Selma was committed to empowering individuals and couples to have a safe, calm, satisfying birth experience. She supported births in all the area hospitals and birth centers as well as home births. She passionately believed that education, nurturance, compassion, respect for values (both social and cultural), and advocacy can elevate the experience of pregnancy, birth and parenting so that each birth is a joyful unique journey. Selma touched the lives of hundreds of families and birth workers over the years. She passed away after a long illness at the end of January, 2023, leaving behind loving children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and colleagues.
